Q. How do I get a recycling cart?
A. To request a recycling cart in East Baton Rouge Parish call either the East Baton Rouge Parish Recycling Office 389-5194 or the Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge at (225) 925-3442. To request a recycling cart in Lafayette call The Recycling Foundation at 337-234-0066. To request a cart in Youngsville call the city government at 337-856-4181.

Q. Which day should I set out my recycling cart?
A. Recycling occurs in your area on one of your scheduled garbage days. Check the Collection Schedule to locate your neighborhood and the appropriate collection day.

Q. What can I put in my recycle cart?
A. Newspaper, magazines, scrap paper, cardboard (folded and flatted), glass, plastics with a 1 through 7 inside the recycle arrow, milk cartons, juice boxes, detergent refill containers, aluminum cans, tin cans, steel cans, bi-metal cans, pie pans, metal lids.

Q. What time should I put out my recycling (s)?
A. It is best to put your recycling bin out the night before your bin is to be picked up. Route pick up begins at 5 a.m. each morning.

Q. What should I do if the recycling truck accidentally misses my weekly pick-up?
A. Please contact your local government and they will turn in a service request for collection. The numbers for those governments can be found on the individual city pages.

Q. Can I recycle magazines, junk mail, newspaper inserts, and phone books?
A. Yes, just put these items in your recycling cart, box, or a paper bag. These materials are collected along with other paper materials here in Baton Rouge.

Q. What happens to the recyclables after they are collected?
A. Materials are separated, baled, and shipped off to be processed into new recycled products such as newspaper, insulation, carpet, T-shirts, sweaters, construction materials, tin and aluminum cans.

Q. Why should I buy recycled products?
A. By purchasing recycled products, you are creating a market for the materials you set out at the curb. The recycling industry also creates jobs; according to a 2002 survey, over 300 jobs are associated with the recycling industry in East Baton Rouge Parish. Buying recycled products boosts the economy while reducing pollution; saving landfill space; and conserving natural resources, energy, and water. Please, buy recycled products and close the loop.
